Interview
About 10,000 years ago, humans invented agriculture and we began a shift from hunter-gatherers to farmers. However, when it comes to the oceans, we're still behaving like our neolithic ancestors - primarily hunting and gathering, but doing it with sophisticated technologies, like satellite navigation and sonar, to vacuum fish out of the sea. But as wild fisheries continue to decline, the answer may lie in farming the seas - the controversial science known as aquaculture. And if we do it properly, it might even be a sustainable way to exploit the oceans for food -- without emptying them.
